Polycom has instituted a stop ship on the Polycom SoundStation 2W based on a potential safety issue with the battery.  The Polcyom SoundStation 2, Polycom VTX 1000, and all other Polycom products are unaffected by this; only the SoundStation2W is being temporarily put on stop ship.  This action is due to a report that a battery in a SoundStation2W overheated, melting the plastic and causing damage to the table on which it sat.  No injuries have been reported.  Based on this incident, Polycom decided to immediately implement a stop ship on all SoundStation2W units as a precaution while investigating the cause. 

Polycom is taking the following actions to determine the root cause and the appropriate course of action:

• We have retained a team of 3^rd party experts, specializing in battery technology and battery failure analysis.  These experts are working alongside Polycom to determine the root cause of this incident and ensure that the product is safe.  Once the root cause is found, we will determine an appropriate solution and communicate the solution to channels and end users.  Preliminary indications are that the battery is the source of the failure, but we await complete data before announcing any action.
• We are auditing our battery suppliers design practices and manufacturing facilities, and are also investigating alternate battery suppliers.
• We are working closely with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and with corresponding organizations internationally, to determine the best course of action to protect customers.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is a U.S. government agency responsible for product safety, and works with many manufacturers, including those that have battery safety issues, such as Dell, HP, Apple, Nikon, and others.

Once the root cause has been determined and an appropriate solution is identified, Polycom and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will communicate next steps to channels and customers. We will follow up as soon as we have more information and will send out another update no later than February 10, 2006.

Polycom is currently investigating a potential safety issue with the Polycom SoundStation2W (2200-07800-001 & 2200-07880-001), which they believe is related to the battery. They have received a report regarding an incident of overheating that could lead to a potential fire hazard. No injuries have been reported. Pending the results of the investigation, Polycom has put a stop ship in place on SoundStation2W's to Polycom channels effective immediately. This potential safety issue does not impact any other Polycom SoundStation products or other Polycom products other than the SoundStation2W.

By this notification, Polycom is also instructing all channels to put an immediate stop ship in place to all customers including resellers and end users and to communicate this stop ship to all resellers/dealers who sell the SoundStation2W until further notification from Polycom.
